چکیده
Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) components for total joint replacement generate wear particles which cause adverse biological tissue reactions leading to osteolysis and loosening. Sterilisation of UHMWPE components by gamma irradiation in air causes chain scissions which initiate a long-term oxidative process that degrades the chemical and mechanical properties of the polyethylene. Using a tri-pin-on-disc tribometer we studied the effect of ageing for ten years after gamma irradiation in air on the volumetric wear, particle size distribution and the number of particles produced by UHMWPE when sliding against a stainless-steel counterface. The aged and irradiated material produced six times more volumetric wear and 34 times more wear particles per unit load per unit sliding distance than non-sterilised UHMWPE. Our findings indicate that oxidative degradation of polyethylene after gamma irradiation in air with ageing produces more wear.

Anti-oxidation Treatment of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Components to Decrease Periprosthetic Osteolysis: Evaluation of Osteolytic and Osteogenic Properties of Wear Debris Particles in a Murine Calvaria Model
Wear debris-induced osteolysis remains the greatest limitation of long-term success for total joint replacements with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) bearings. To address oxidative degradation post-gamma irradiation, manufacturers are investigating the incorporation of antioxidants into PE resins. Similarly, larger molecular weight monomers have been developed to increase cros...
متن کاملA comparison of the wear and physical properties of silane cross-linked polyethylene and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.
Cross-linked polyethylenes are being introduced widely in acetabular cups in hip prostheses as a strategy to reduce the incidence of wear debris-induced osteolysis. It will be many years before substantial clinical data can be collected on the wear of these new materials. Silane cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) was introduced into clinical practice in a limited series of acetabular cups in 1986...
متن کاملPolyethylene Wear Debris From a Knee Simulator Model: Effect of Crosslinking and Counterface Material
INTRODUCION: Improved wear resistance of crosslinked UHMWPE has been well demonstrated in both hip and knee [1-4]. A reduction of 70% can be shown in knee simulators from conventional crosslinked tibial inserts (CXPE) gamma-irradiated at 3.5Mrad to 7Mrad highly crosslinked inserts (HXPE). Hip simulator models indicated that debris size decreased with increased crosslinking [5]. In the knee it h...
متن کاملNanomechanical and surface properties of rMSCs post-exposure to CAP treated UHMWPE wear particles
UNLABELLED Wear debris generated by ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) used in joint replacement devices has been of concern due to reductions of the implant longevity. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has been used to improve the wear performance of UHMWPE. Our aim was to investigate the elastic and adhesive properties of rat mesenchymal stem cells (rMSCs), through AFM, after expos...
متن کاملComparison of periprosthetic tissue digestion methods for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene wear debris extraction.
There is considerable interest in characterization of wear debris from polyethylene (UHMWPE) bearing components used in total joint replacement. To isolate UHMWPE wear debris, tissue samples must be excised from regions adjacent to revised UHMWPE implant components, followed by exposure to one of many available tissue digestion methods. Numerous studies demonstrate successful digestion, but the...
